Noteworthy city parks of Budapest

Széllkapu Park

Park Built on a Former Factory Site

The park, built on the site of a former factory, conceals a massive underground garage beneath its surface. Its most spectacular feature is the green wall, grown on a 350-ton steel frame, which serves as a walkway, connecting element, and a resting and viewing point. This wall is the largest hanging garden in Central Europe. The pre-cultivated climbing plants provide a unique spatial experience, with the color of the wall changing with the seasons. The original idea of the architects was to obscure the view of the shopping center behind it.

Lush, dense vegetation, an imitation of an urban forest, or a wildflower meadow, together with different themed green spaces, create an exciting environment, enhanced by a 650-square-meter lake with vibrant wildlife. Three striking, custom-designed solar panels are focal points of the park's architecture. These structures not only provide shade but also contribute to the park's energy supply.

Beneath the park, there is a 500-space underground garage, an electric car charging station, and a bicycle storage area. Vegetation extends into this area as well, with the exposed concrete elements around the entrance covered in diverse green surfaces.

Strong retaining walls create an enclosed unit within the park. According to impact studies, a gentle breeze can be felt at human height due to the wind tunnel effect, and the significant increase in green space positively impacts air quality.

The cherry tree grove, consisting of 115 trees, was created by planting two types of cherry trees side by side. Their blossoms in April provide a unique experience, and in a few years, their canopies will merge to form a densely flowering "sky." In the park, a total of 330 trees, 25,500 shrubs, 49,200 perennials, 22,000 ornamental grasses, and 43,400 bulbous plants were planted.

Margitsziget (Margaret Island)

150 Years of History, Incredible Popularity,
Unbelievable Stress for the flora

An unavoidable renovation has taken place. The Japanese garden has been renewed, asphalt roads have been replaced with permeable pavements, the running track has been updated, playgrounds have been revamped, and the musical fountain has been restored with modern technology. The park features refined landscape architectural solutions, biodiversity plantings adapted to the changing climate, 21st-century public restrooms, and minimally constructed hospitality infrastructure. It also boasts its famously impressive flower beds and rose gardens.

The goal remains unchanged: to continue meeting the needs of city dwellers and tourists for all-day visits, but now in a truly European manner—subtly, yet with attention to every detail, at the highest level.

Várkert Bazár (Castle Garden Bazaar)

The rebirth of a historic ornamental garden -
the Várkert Bazár in Budapest

The Várkert Bazár is actually an imposing building complex, mostly hidden in the hill, one of the most beautiful facades of the Buda panorama. However, the most important part of it is the garden itself, and it always has been. The beautiful work of Miklós Ybl, created between 1875 and 1883, was actually needed to close the royal gardens so that there was a nice view of Pest from there, and of course it was showy from the other side as well.

The garden and the architecture are the same in style and structure. The pergolas of the Neo-Renaissance composition and the walls of the ramps are covered with plants, the openings of the garden arranged according to geometric rules are emphasized by fountains. The original garden was completely destroyed by the end of the 20th century, and restorations focused only on medieval values. From this state, the park had to be recreated, taking into account that an underground parking garage and an event hall were also added to the side of the Castle Hill.

The walking paths of the finished garden follow the path of the original ones. Along the central promenade, the former row of roses border has been restored, the promenade is closed by the reconstructed Bear's Head Well on the castle wall. The central lookout point of the Várkert Bazár is the gloriette, in its axis the replica of the Triton statue (disappeared during the World War) and the fountain in the embrace of the grotto have been returned. The back walkway received a construction similar to the previous one, which carves out a little space from the steep hillside. Its kidney-shaped arch recalls the former promenade, and a water feature in the form of a water curtain falling from the wall was also added here.

The development is completed by the fact that, during the restoration, a new public park was created in a place where the former courtyards always fulfilled the functions appropriate to the given age. And this is the “Öntőház” courtyard created with contemporary landscape architecture.

Budapest City Park

The rebirth of a two-hundred-year-old park,
Budapest City Park

Városliget is one of the first public parks in Europe, established by a city at its own expense, in its own territory, for its citizens. In 1816, a design competition was launched for its territory, where Heinrich Christian Nebbien's project was chosen as the best. Based on his plans, the park developed over three decades and had its heyday in the early 1840s. The goals of the current renovation are the same as the previous ones: "the park should serve as a pleasant place of rest and entertainment for the entire urban society".

The landscape design started in 2016, and the contract was awarded to Garten Studio Kft., the winner of the international design competition. The winning concept reached back to the original landscape garden, and even if it could not reconstruct the park in its original form, it brought back many of its original elements in its structure and function.

In parallel with the planning, the first 3 phases of the park development have already been handed over, and they are extremely popular.

The Mőcsényi Legacy

Hungarian Landscape Architecture Between Two IFLA Conferences: Siófok, 1984 – Budapest, 2024

Mihály Mőcsényi (1919-2017) Kossuth and Széchenyi award-winning Hungarian horticultural engineer, landscape architect, founder of landscape planning education in Hungary, university professor who established the independent Faculty of Landscape Architecture.

September 26-29, 1984, Hungary hosted the 22nd Congress of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA). At the congress, representatives from thirteen countries presented the ecological and aesthetic values and development opportunities of peri-urban landscapes in accordance with the set theme (Urban Fringe). This was the first occasion when landscape architects from socialist states attended an IFLA event.

According to the main organizer of the congress, Mihály Mőcsényi, the event was successful professionally, socially, and politically. Western participants referred to it as the 'conference of the heart,' while representatives from the Eastern Bloc called it the ‘friendship’ congress.

The special edition of 4D magazine, preparation for the IFLA EU congress in Budapest from October 17-20, 2024, provides insights into the developments in Hungarian landscape architecture over the 40 years between the 1984 Siófok and the 2024 Budapest IFLA conferences. Accordingly, the special edition consists of five major chapters, presenting the past forty years of the Hungarian landscape architecture profession in the following areas: planning, education, research, legislative background, and volunteering.
